I recently returned from a visit to Washington state, where I spoke in several cities concerning my work in forensic neuropsychology and neurotoxicology at the Hanford site.

The following is information from Wikipedia: “The Hanford Site is a decommissioned nuclear production complex operated by the United States federal government on the Columbia River in the U.S. state of Washington. The site has been known by many names, including Hanford Project, Hanford Works, Hanford Engineer Works and Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project in Hanford, south-central Washington, the site was home to the B Reactor, the first full-scale plutonium production reactor in the world. Plutonium manufactured at the site was used in the first nuclear bomb, tested at the Trinity site, and in Fat Man, the bomb detonated over Nagasaki, Japan.

During the Cold War, the project expanded to include nine nuclear reactors and five large plutonium processing complexes, which produced plutonium for most of the more than 60,000 weapons built for the U.S. nuclear arsenal.”

This production left behind 53 million US gallons of high-level radioactive waste, 25,000,000 ft.³ of solid radioactive waste, and 200 mi.² of contaminated groundwater beneath the site.

Workers at the site have been injured from their exposures, resulting in neurotoxicity and neuropsychological symptoms. I have assisted several workers at the site who were appealing their denial of disability benefits for their work at Hanford, and these appeals were eventually adjudicated in favor of the worker’s disability claims.

For a Seattle NBC-affiliate King-5 investigation of the difficulty that Hanford workers face to get compensated for their injuries, and where I was interviewed, see https://www.king5.com/article/news/local/hanford/at-hanford-workers-comp-can-be-humiliating-system/416202144
